About this Artwork

A subject the gospels do not contain

The title describes the Christ Child handing bread to pilgrims. No such episode appears in the four gospels, which give the infancy in a few chapters and then jump to the adult ministry. The subject belongs instead to the devotional imagery that grew up around religious houses and their charitable work, where the child performs in image what the institution performed in fact.

Its relation to the cycle

It borrows the infancy figure and steps outside the narrative. A cycle in order has no slot for it: after the Presentation and the flight into Egypt the sources are silent until the boy is found among the doctors. Images of this kind occupy that silence, and their placement was a matter of where they hung rather than of when they happened.

What the record holds

The catalogue names Bartolome Esteban Murillo, dates the canvas to 1678, and gives the Hungarian National Museum, Budapest, Hungary, as the location. It measures 219 x 172 cm — upright and large, a wall picture rather than a devotional panel. The style is entered as Baroque and the artist as Spanish; the subject fields class the work as a group composition and as religious. The measured palette reads as brown. The record carries no patron, no institution of origin, and no ownership history, so none is stated here.
