About this Artwork
The column
The Flagellation is the scourging ordered after the trial. The gospels report it in a clause — Pilate had him scourged — and give no setting, so the column came from tradition rather than from the text and then became the fixed sign of the episode. A title that names the column names the scene without needing to name the act.
Where it sits in the Passion
After the trials before the high priest and the governor, and before the crowning with thorns and the road to Calvary. It is the first of the three episodes of physical violence that the Passion sets in a row, and it is the one that painting kept closest to a single upright figure, because the column supplies the axis.
What the catalogue records
The entry gives Caravaggio, 1607, and the Musee des Beaux-Arts de Rouen, Rouen, France. It measures 134.5 x 175.5 cm, horizontal — wider than tall, which is not the usual proportion for this subject. The style is entered as Baroque and, in a second tag, as Tenebrism; the artist is recorded as Italian. The subject fields class the work as a group composition and as religious. The measured palette reads as red. Five works in this catalogue are entered under this artist.
