About this Artwork
The lake, after the Resurrection
John's final chapter puts the disciples back at work. They fish through the night on the Sea of Tiberias and catch nothing; a figure on the shore tells them where to cast; the net fills, and they recognise him. It is the last appearance narrated in that gospel and one of the few in which the risen Christ is seen at a distance rather than in a room.
Where it falls in the cycle
After the empty tomb and the appearances in Jerusalem, before the Ascension. The recorded title begins with the word landscape, and that ordering is the subject: sixteenth-century Netherlandish painting placed sacred episodes inside panoramic world views, so that the event is small and the geography is large. The record supports the reading, filing the work under landscape, mountain and rock as well as under religion.
The catalogue entry
The record gives Pieter Bruegel the Elder, 1553, and enters the location as Private Collection, with no city or country. It measures 67 x 100 cm, horizontal — a cabinet panel rather than an altarpiece, which matches the landscape classification. The style is entered as Northern Renaissance and the artist as Flemish. The measured palette reads as brown. Because the location field names no institution, nothing further is said about where the panel is.
