About this Artwork
The agony in the garden
After the last supper Christ goes with the disciples to Gethsemane, at the foot of the Mount of Olives, and prays while they sleep. The synoptic accounts give the prayer that the cup might pass, and Luke adds an angel who strengthens him. The pictorial convention follows the text closely: a kneeling figure apart, sleeping companions below, and often an angel with a cup.
Its place in the Passion
It is the first scene of the Passion proper. The supper is over, the betrayal is arranged, and the arrest happens in this same garden minutes later. Everything that follows — the trials, the flagellation, Calvary — is set in motion from here, which is why cycles treat Gethsemane as the threshold rather than as one episode among the rest.
What the record holds
The catalogue names Paolo Veronese, dates the work to 1584, and gives the Palazzo Brera, Milan. It measures 108 by 180 centimetres, a horizontal canvas. The style is entered as Mannerism and late Renaissance and the artist as Italian. The measured palette reads as brown. No patron, church of origin, or later owner is recorded, and none is claimed here.
