About this Artwork
The crowning with thorns
The episode comes after the scourging: soldiers plait a crown of thorns, force it down, and salute the prisoner as king of the Jews. Where the mocking turns on a blindfold and a question, the crowning turns on the object itself, and the convention is a close group of tormentors pressing in around a single passive head — usually four figures, one at each corner of the panel.
Where it falls in the Passion
Inside the praetorium, between the scourging and the Ecce Homo, and just before the crowd is asked to choose. It is a scene of humiliation rather than of judgement, and it supplies the crown that stays on the head for the rest of the cycle, through Calvary and into the Deposition.
The catalogue entry
The record names Hieronymus Bosch, dates the work to 1510, and gives El Escorial, Madrid, as the location. It measures 195 by 165 centimetres. The style is entered as Northern Renaissance and the artist as Dutch, and the subject fields class the work as a group composition and as religious. The measured palette reads as brown. No commission, patron, or earlier location appears in the record.
