About this Artwork

The cross at private scale

The Crucifixion is the fixed centre of the cycle, given in all four gospels and never moved in a narrative sequence. It is also the episode most often reduced: from the full Calvary with thieves, soldiers and mourners down to a single figure on a single cross, which is what a bare title of this kind usually indicates.

What the size implies

The record gives 57 by 33 centimetres. That is a narrow upright at a fraction of life size, and it separates this entry sharply from the altar-scale crucifixions elsewhere in this catalogue, some of which exceed four metres. Twenty-four titles here name the crucifixion or put Christ on the cross, and their recorded dimensions span that entire range — the same episode serving a chapel wall and a private room.

The record

The catalogue names El Greco, dates the work to 1587, and gives the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, one of three entries here in that collection. The style is entered as Mannerism and late Renaissance and the artist as Spanish. The subject fields on this entry include an abstract-art classification alongside the religious ones — a modern label applied by the cataloguing scheme, carried by fourteen entries here, and not a period description. The measured palette is recorded as neutral.
