About this Artwork

Two moments that cannot share a room

The title puts a painter in front of the cross. Luke, one of the four evangelists, was taken up in later tradition as a painter, and images of him at his easel are common; the crucifixion is the central episode of the Passion. Putting the two together produces a scene that is not narrative at all, since the evangelist belongs to the writing of the story rather than to its events.

How it stands to the cycle

Beside it, not inside it. Seventeen titles in this catalogue place Christ on the cross, and nearly all of them are narrative: the mourners, the soldiers, the thieves, the darkened sky. A picture that adds a later figure changes the question from what happened to who is looking, which is the register of devotional painting rather than of the sequence.

What the record holds

The catalogue gives Francisco de Zurbaran, 1660, and the Museo del Prado, Madrid, Spain. It measures 108 x 84 cm, upright and moderate — the scale of a picture meant to be stood in front of rather than seen across a nave. The style is entered as Baroque and the artist as Spanish; the subject fields class the work as a single male figure and as religious. The measured palette reads as brown. The entry says nothing about a commission, a religious house, or an earlier owner, and none is supplied here.
