About this Artwork

The pause between two movements

The Lamentation is the stop after the body has been taken down and before it is carried to the tomb. The gospels do not describe it; they give the deposition and the burial as a continuous act. Painting opened a gap between them because grief needs a scene and burial does not provide one. The subject is recognised by who is present rather than by anything being done.

Its place in the sequence

Friday evening, after the Deposition, before the Entombment, with the Resurrection two days off. The catalogue is heavily weighted toward this halt: twenty-five titles name a Lamentation, against four for the Deposition and five for the Entombment that stand on either side of it.

The record

The entry gives Giovanni Bellini, 1500, and the Uffizi Gallery, Florence, Italy — one of only five works in this catalogue recorded there. It measures 76 x 121 cm, a wide horizontal, which is the proportion a group laid along the ground asks for. The style is entered as High Renaissance and the artist as Italian; the subject fields class the work as a group composition and as religious. The measured palette reads as brown. Nothing in the record concerns the support, the altar, or the history of the panel before Florence.
