About this Artwork
The Transfiguration
Christ takes Peter, James, and John up a mountain and is transfigured before them; Moses and Elijah appear beside him and a voice speaks from a cloud. The iconography is fixed by that arrangement — a raised central figure between two prophets, three disciples below — and it is one of the few episodes in which the gospel text specifies who is present and where each stands.
Its place in the sequence
It is the turning point of the ministry. In the synoptic ordering it comes after Peter's confession and immediately before the descent toward Jerusalem, and the gospels have Christ speak of his coming death on the way down. A cycle read in order treats it as the last scene of the public ministry looking forward rather than back.
The record
The catalogue gives Giovanni Bellini, 1480, and the National Museum of Capodimonte, Naples. The panel measures 115 by 152 centimetres, horizontal. The style is entered as Early Renaissance and the artist as Italian, and the subject fields class the work as a group composition and as religious. The measured palette reads as brown. The record carries no note on the commission or on how the panel reached Naples.
