About this Artwork
The episode: the cross with its three witnesses
The Crucifixion is the fixed centre of the cycle, and the version named in this title is the reduced one. John's account puts the mother, the beloved disciple and the women at the foot of the cross; the recorded title names two Maries and St. John, which is the small group rather than the crowded Calvary of the synoptic scenes. That choice makes the subject devotional in scale even when the format is not.
Where it falls in the sequence
After the road to Calvary and before the Deposition. Seventeen titles in this catalogue place Christ on the cross and five name a Crucifixion outright, which together make it the most repeated moment of the whole narrative here.
What the record gives
The catalogue enters the work under El Greco — one of seventeen entries for that artist in this catalogue — with 1588 as the date of creation. The location is the National Art Gallery (Alexandros Soutzos Museum), Athens, Greece. It measures 120 x 80 cm, upright. The style is recorded as Mannerism Late Renaissance and the artist as Spanish; the subject fields class the work as a group composition and as religious. The measured palette reads as red. The record notes no patron and no earlier collection.
