About this Artwork

Simon of Cyrene, or not

Matthew, Mark and Luke all report that the soldiers compelled a passer-by, Simon of Cyrene, to carry the cross. John's account says Christ went out bearing it himself. The two versions produced two families of picture, and the difference is doctrinal as much as narrative: one shows the weight shared, the other shows it borne alone. A title that says only Christ Carrying the Cross does not settle which reading a given canvas follows.

Its place in the Passion

After the sentence and before Golgotha. In the devotional scheme of the Stations of the Cross, which fixed the road into numbered stops, this stretch supplies more stations than any other part of the story — the meeting with the mother, the falls, Veronica, the women of Jerusalem. Those stops are a devotional structure, not gospel text, and painting drew subjects from both.

The record

The catalogue gives Jacob Jordaens, 1660, and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. At 240 by 175 centimetres this is an upright at altar scale, the largest of the four carrying-the-cross entries measured in this group. The style is entered as Baroque and the artist as Flemish. The measured palette reads as brown. The record holds no note on commission or provenance.
