About this Artwork
The mocking
Between the sentence and the road to Calvary the gospels place a scene in the guardroom: the soldiers dress the prisoner in a robe, put a reed in his hand, kneel in mock homage. It is the only episode of the Passion whose whole content is derision, and painting used it to bring the executioners forward as individuals rather than as a crowd.
Its place in the sequence
After the trial before Pilate and after the flagellation, before the carrying of the cross. Nine titles in this catalogue use the word mock, which puts the episode among the most frequently entered of the Passion here, close behind the crucifixion itself.
What the record holds
The catalogue names Edouard Manet, dates the canvas to 1865, and places it in the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL, US. It measures 191 x 147 cm — upright, life-scale, the format of a public picture. The style tags are unusual for the subject: the record enters Realism, and also Surrealism, which sits oddly against a nineteenth-century date and is reproduced here as the record has it rather than corrected. The artist is entered as French, the subject as a group composition and as religious. The measured palette reads as red and yellow.
