About this Artwork

The episode: the Baptist points him out

The subject is the opening chapter of John. The Baptist, preaching at the Jordan, sees Christ approaching among the people and identifies him to the crowd. Everything turns on that recognition: the figure who has been announced is now present, and the ministry begins from this moment rather than from a miracle.

Where it falls in the cycle

At the hinge. The infancy is finished; the baptism in the Jordan is immediately at hand; the calling of the first disciples follows within the same chapter. The scene is unusual in that its dramatic weight sits with the crowd rather than with Christ, who in the narrative is still at a distance.

What the record holds

The catalogue names Alexander Ivanov, dates the canvas to 1857, and places it in the Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow, Russia. The measurements are the largest recorded anywhere in this catalogue: 540 x 750 cm, a horizontal wall of a picture rather than an easel work. The style is entered as Academicism and the artist as Russian; the subject fields class it as a group composition. The measured palette reads as ochre. The record carries nothing on how long the canvas took, what it was made for, or how it reached Moscow, and this page adds none of it.
