About this Artwork
The blessing, taken out of time
Christ blessing is not an episode. It is a devotional type: the figure shown frontally with the hand raised, without a setting that would fix it to a day. The gesture appears inside the narrative often enough — at the supper, at Emmaus, at the parting on the mount — but an image that gives only the gesture is refusing to name which.
How it stands to the cycle
Outside it, alongside the Salvator Mundi and the Man of Sorrows. Small panels of this kind were made for private use, where the point is not to follow a story but to have a single image constantly available. Where a narrative panel answers the question of when, this one answers only the question of who.
The catalogue entry
The record gives Raphael, 1502, and the Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo, Brescia, Italy. It measures 30 x 25 cm — a format that only makes sense at arm's length. The style is entered as High Renaissance and the artist as Italian; the subject fields class the work under portraits. The measured palette reads as yellow. The record carries no patron, no earlier collection and no note on the panel's support, so none of that is stated here.
